I Could Use A Little Productivity501!
Productivity501 is a website run by Mark Shead. From his AboutMe page you learn that Mark is a technology consultant. I am reviewing this website because, if my review is picked, Mark will give me an iPod. Since I don’t have an iPod and, although I asked, my wife did not get me one for Christmas, I’m hoping this review will be well received
There’s a lot I like about his website.
It’s neat and easy to read. Navigation is very self-evident. This is not true about every blog. For instance, on the top right hand corner of the page is the Feedburner button so you can subscribe (currently missing on my blog). Right below that, you get an email subscription button, then a picture of Mark himself.
A little farther down, Mark has links to his other blogs. Looks like he has his own blogiverse going on here. (That’s a good thing. If someone likes what you write on a certain subject, they’ll probably like what you write on other subjects.)
Marks posts are interesting. I like the following two: The Most For Your Minute, and The Have-Done List.
In The Most For Your Minute, Mark talks about looking at the time allotted to our lives like money. If you look at the minutes in your life like currency and how you spend your time like how you spend your money, you might be more productive. Of course, this would not help if you were a spendthrift, and somehow I suppose being a spendthrift and wasting time go hand in hand. Good thought, although I’m not sure that it would work unless preaching to the crowd.
I like The Have-Done List better.
I think it would be safe to say that anyone interested in personal productivity would have difficulty doing nothing–as on vacation. Mark solves this problem nicely for those who are mildly Obsessive/Compulsive. (I am, so I can say this with a straight face.) Let’s say you’re on vacation. Instead of approaching it like you would prepare a PowerPoint for your next business meeting, just relax and live serendipitously. You can do this because instead of making your to-do list in the morning and following it. You just sit down at the end of the day and make your “have-done” list. This is kind of like target practice, where you shoot the pistol, then place the target. Hard to miss that way.
There’s nothing I don’t like about Mark’s website, although there are some things I would change if it were my website. Productivity501 needs a little more of a human touch. Mark must be living an interesting life; he and his wife live in Mexico and are in this country to have their baby. (Probably a wise decision.) Instead of the posts just being productivity tips, I think Mark should mix it up some. Add some personal stories, maybe some stories about friends. Essentially what his posts need is more of a story-teller’s touch.
One more thing, Mark needs to post more often. I liked his blog so much I have it sent to my MyYahoo page. I’ve only seen one new post in the last few days. Mark is a good, clear writer and he’s writing on topics that are of interest. Readers, however, need current posts to keep their attention–kind of like girlfriends need attention on a daily basis so that they know you still care
.
All in all, I like Mark’s blog. I think he’s done a good job. If you want to review his blog and maybe win an iPod, click here. I’m sure Mark would appreciate it.
