Never Fail Ever Again, And…
…never do anything worthwhile either.
People who get things done know that failure is just part of the game of success.
Thomas Edison: “Genius is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration.”
So, why is our educational system based on teaching kids to avoid failure? It seems to me that we should be teaching them to embrace failure!
I know I’ve failed a lot, yet I consider myself to be a roaring success!
Take Gene Simmons, for instance. In case you don’t know who he is, he started the ultra-successful band KISS. Simmons is also a media-mogul, music producer, movie producer, journalist, you name it, and he’s worth millions.
He wrote a book called Gene Simmons Family Jewels: Sex, Money KISS. (I highly recommend this book! It’s like having your own ultra-rich, ultra-successful, ultra-cool Jewish uncle telling you how he did it…and how you can, too!)
Let me quote from the book: “Most of the ventures I undertake fail. So will yours. So what! Get used to being immune to the word “NO” and the concept of failure.”
Now, Simmons knows how to succeed. Basically his formula is trust your gut and try lots of stuff. Some of what you try will make you rich.
School, however, teaches us to stay frozen in our tracks wondering which way to turn because the last thing we want is to fail. (Failure means you have to take that stupid course all over again next year and also be labeled a looser by your peers.)
What needs to be taught in school is the value of trying. Try more and although a lot of it won’t work out, some will. Pay attention to the part that does work and forget the part that doesn’t.
So called real life is best lead by those who are oblivious to the concept of failure!
This applies to everything. It applies to blogging.
I ran across blogging at the end of last year. I got online, read a few blogs then decided to start one. I started two on blogspot, but I didn’t like them. When I got serious I started this blog.
As I was getting this blog up and running, I was reading a lot of blogs, John Chow, Steve Pavlina, Steve Olson, Wendy Piersall, Andrew Wee, and Mitch Harper, to name only a few. (If anyone got left out, it was unintentional. I’m pretty good about linking, and I’m sure you’ll get yours very soon.)
The amount of technical knowledge just contained on these few blogs is staggering!
I could have easily been overwhelmed by all of this and just given up on this part of my personal dream. I’m not a geek, and at the moment I don’t have the funds to hire a geek. So, I’ve had to build this blog myself.
I decided to just start the blog anyway, despite the fact it took me half a day to figure out how the blasted FTP program worked on Bluehost!
Not only that, but nearly all of the “experts” I read said I had to have a plan.
Plan? How could I have a plan, when I didn’t really know what this baby was capable of?
So, I started without a plan. (I’m assuming a plan will occur to me when I’m ready.) I also started without sufficient technical knowledge.
This blog will either fly or it won’t. Worst case, I’ve learned something (a lot), best case I will have created another income stream.
What haven’t you started because you were worried about failure? Do it anyway! Start the business, ask the girl for a date, quit your totally ridiculous job, start drawing, get off the couch and get in shape!
You’ve got the picture.
Start really living!
Hasta la vista, Baby!
