Free PDF Resources
So far with my How To Quit Smoking Book, I’ve written it, translated it into a .pdf file (so that anyone can read it on any machine–Windows, Mac, or Unix), and uploaded it to Payloadz and to Lulu.com. I’ve written a post about uploading it to Payloadz and trying to sell it during one seven day auction on eBay. I’ll write another post specifically about Lulu. But what I wanted to do here was alert you to a really great post by Ilker Yoldas on The Thinking Blog.
Ilker has investigated quite a few free online resources that you can use to turn your Word or whatever file into a .pdf file. I had used Primopdf.com, myself, which I liked with one exception. Primo does not convert my links. Let me explain what I mean.
One of the main differences between ebooks and a printed book is that ebooks can be much more up to the minute as to the information they contain. If you’re writing anything that has to do with or uses technology or the Internet, that’s a really important distinction.
I’m not interested in writing about geekdom, per se, but I am very interested in exploiting the web to communicate with the world (and hopefully to make money doing so). So, for me the technology is a means to an end.
Take my How To Quit Smoking book, for instance. My first edition contains an important link to the American Cancer Society. That link didn’t survive being translated from my Word document to a .pdf file using Primo, so I had to put a footnote at the bottom of the page with the long, cryptic link actually written out. Fewer readers are going to copy and paste that link into their browser this way. Yet this is very important and motivational information for anyone wanting to quit smoking.
Take a look at Ilker’s post!
Kudos to him for providing us with such great information!
