How Did We Evolve If Running Naked Hurts So Much?

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

I was in traffic yesterday listening to the radio. Generally I switch between a hard rock station and a country station to avoid the ads. Both had ads on at the moment, so I wandered over to NPR, where much to my delight there was a story about how memberships in nudist colonies are declining.

Maybe It’s Time You Got A MySpace Account!

Friday, May 18th, 2007

I’m constantly amazed at what parents don’t know about their children.

It ain’t like when you and I were kids. When you’re not watching them, your children aren’t just sitting at home in front of the television looking at Leave It To Beaver.

As a public school teacher, I suspect I know quite a bit more about what your kids are doing than you do. What they are actually up to would shock you.

I am remarkably inept when it comes to blogging. I can do two things correctly. I can write like a scalded dog. (Well, maybe not that good–but I think I can.) I can also think logically.

I had only learned about the existence of blogging just before last mid-term elections. I had never heard of social bookmarking.

Monday, May 14th, 2007

I was reading Wendy Piersall’s blog, emomsathome.com. She’s got a great post about what she would redo about her life if given the chance. She mainly focuses on two issues in her life.

ZacJohnson.Com Review

Saturday, May 12th, 2007

There are a ton of people out there telling you how to make money online. Although, I’m a true online newbie, I’m not that new in general. (I’m close to half a century old.) Most of these folks are cyber snake oil salesmen (and women).

Zac Johnson apparently is not. That is he’s the real deal.

What Exactly Do You Want Your Children To Learn In School?

Thursday, May 10th, 2007

Children don’t learn the basics is usually what I hear. I would have to add to that school’s (government’s) growing usurpation of the rights of the American family.

What if, however, the main problem with public school lay not with the institution of school itself, but with our own confusion about what we want school to be and provide? Sometimes situations are challenging because we’re not asking the right questions. Change the questions, change the outcome. Let me explain…

Reading Problem Solved!…(Not!)

Sunday, May 6th, 2007

I’ve noticed that some of my most popular posts are about education. I’m a public school educator, and I’m not blind to the problems that we have in education. (I am quite willing to do my part to solve those problems, however, even if the system is flawed.) Although I teach math, reading is the other big part of the puzzle. Here’s an article I ran across about how one school system is trying to get kids to read.

What To Do If Your Child Struggles With Math

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2007

I teach high school mathematics. I’ve done so for nearly ten years. I’ve taught everything from algebra to calculus to computer science. In other words I’ve got a lot of experience watching kids struggle with learning mathematics. I’ve come to the conclusion that there are only two reasons why kids don’t do well with math.
